Yesterday, we had a game of Paranoia, which (to quote Wiki), is “a humorous role-playing game set in a dystopian future similar to Nineteen Eighty-Four, Logan’s Run and THX 1138 among others; however, the tone of the game is rife with black humor, frequently tongue-in-cheek rather than dark and heavy.” Simply put, Alpha Complex is ruled by a Computer, which looks to the past to see the cause of the nuclear apocalypse. It decides it is the communists. The communists are all treasonous and are executed. So are mutants. And members of secret societies. Interestingly, Computer runs Alpha Complex so it’s actually a communist state, the nuclear-nature of the end of the world means everyone is a mutant, and everyone is part of a secret society. Hilarity ensues.
There is a lot of death. I died before the game even started after the admittance of an aptitude test of sorts. Luckily, besides a grenade snafu that was later retcon’d, I only died during the test. I successfully did my secret society mission, may or may not have helped my friends get killed, but got tricked by Liana and ended up getting heavily medicated at the end of the game (but not executed!).
It was a good time. I’m looking forward to our next round.
